Hearing Loss to 15 Year-Old as a Result of Medication Overdose
WRSMH settled a medical malpractice action involving hearing loss in a 15 year old girl as a result of over-administration of the medication Desferal. Plaintiff was admitted to the defendant hospital because she experienced a sickle cell crisis. She was given the drug Desferal in a dosage that was substantially greater than the accepted dosage, which resulted in profound hearing loss in her left ear. The firm was able to obtain this settlement despite the fact that plaintiff had a significant pre-existing hearing loss in both ears likely due to either her sickle cell disease or prior use of Desferal.
