What Is RSD (Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy)?
RSD is an acronym for "Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy," a syndrome also known as Complex Regional Pain Syndrome. RSD is a chronic pain condition that has to do with a damaged nervous system and is usually acquired in relation to trauma from an injury.
The Symptoms of RSD
RSD has one common symptom intense pain. However, different symptoms may exist in different patients. One limb or extremity is generally affected; symptoms include changes in skin texture or hair, changes in the skins temperature, sensitivity of the skin, swollen or stiff joints, burning or intense pain, and/or inability or decreased ability to move an extremity or extremities.
What Can Trigger RSD?
RSD is not yet completely understood, but it can be triggered by an accident or personal injury. An automobile accident, slip and fall, or trauma to the extremity can lead to RSD.
Is RSD a Common Illness?
Not necessarily. Unfortunately, RSD shares symptoms with many other conditions and can be mistaken for other illnesses. While many general practitioners are not experienced with RSD, it can be diagnosed and treated quite effectively by a pain specialist or neurosurgeon. However, misdiagnosis or late diagnosis is common and can complicate the outcome of RSD.
What Are Common Treatments?
Treatments for RSD vary from physical therapy to drug intervention, psychotherapy, nerve block procedures, spinal cord stimulation, and even surgery. However, treatment regimens will vary depending on patient.
What Recourse Is Available For Patients Who Acquired RSD Through an Injury or Accident Caused by Another?
If you believe your RSD is related to a traumatic event or injury, you could have legal recourse. Lawsuits can be complicated due to medical factors and the need to prove negligence or liability. Often, insurers or perpetrators deny the existence of RSD and fight such claims vigorously. That's why it's important to consult with an experienced New York City personal injury attorney if you are considering filing a lawsuit.
