Every October, Americans spend billions of dollars on all things Halloween. According to a National Retail Federation (NRF) survey, Americans are expected to spend $2.6 billion this Halloween season, with $1 billion of that being spent on children’s costumes alone. While costumes definitely come in all shapes and sizes, some are clearly more popular than others. According to the NRF, here are the 10 most popular:
Fairy
A pair of wings is the focal point of this popular children’s costume. Couple those wings with a whimsical dress or ballet tutu, and you have yourself the 10th most popular children’s Halloween costume of 2013.
Superman
It’s a bird … it’s a plane … it’s the 9th most popular children’s Halloween costume of 2013. A classic superhero outfit that numerous children find themselves enamored with, who wouldn’t want to dress up as the Man of Steel? After all, he CAN fly.
Disney Princess
When Walt Disney produced Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs way back in 1937, he had no idea of how many more Disney Princesses Snow White was preceding and how popular of a Halloween costume Disney Princesses would be almost 80 years later. Disney Princesses come in at a solid #8.
Zombie
A classic scary costume that has undoubtedly risen in popularity thanks to TV shows like The Walking Dead. Zombies stagger into the list at a solid 7th most popular children’s costume.
Witch

Animal
With so many possibilities from the animal kingdom available, it’s no wonder that animal costumes are the 2nd most popular costume choice amongst children. Whether you’re a boy or a girl, you’ll always have plenty of options if you want to dress up as an animal of some kind.
Princess
A party dress, a tiara, and a scepter are all that are needed to put together this simple, yet regal, ensemble. It’s definitely easy to see why Princess lands at #1 on the list. After all, isn’t it every little girl’s dream to become a princess?
